Selecting a period and comparison

Almost every data page in gas calculates numbers for a certain period. You choose the period yourself in the page header and it applies to the whole page: to the cards with values, to the graphs and to the tables. In the same place you set the interval the data in the graph is added up over, and on the cards you will find a comparison with the previous period, that is a coloured badge with the percentage change.

Where to find the period selection

The controls are in the page header, on the same line as the page title. They are not in the top bar of the application, where the search, the customer account switch and the notification bell are.

To the right of the page title you will find, from left to right:

  • the button for the graph type,
  • the button for the interval the data is added up over (labelled Day, Week, Month, Quarter or Year),
  • the button with the calendar icon and the name of the selected period,
  • the button for refreshing the data.

On a phone and a smaller tablet the same buttons are merged into a single narrow bar and show only icons without labels.

Not every page offers a period selection. In Settings, in the list of linked accounts and on other pages without time data the buttons are missing, because there is nothing to calculate for a period there. The controls are not included when the page is printed.

Steps

  1. Open a data page, for example Overview.
  2. In the page header, click the button with the calendar icon. It shows the currently selected period, after your first login Last 7 days.
  3. A menu opens. On a computer the list of preset periods is on the left and the calendar on the right. On a phone the menu slides up from the bottom of the screen and the calendar only appears in it after you choose Custom range.
  4. Click one of the preset periods. The menu closes and the page loads the data again on its own.
  5. If you need a different range, click the first day of the period in the calendar and then its last day. After the second click the menu closes and the button shows both dates instead of a name, for example 1 June 2026 - 30 June 2026.

The button only shows the name of the period. You will see the specific days that go into the number on the card, below its title.

Rolling periods such as Last 7 days do not always end today. For social networks they usually end yesterday, for YouTube and part of the Pinterest data about three days back, because these platforms publish complete figures with a delay. For advertising systems (Meta Ads, Google Ads, Sklik) and for tables with posts, campaigns and goals the period reaches all the way to today.

The interval the data is added up over

Next to the period selection there is a button that says how large the steps are in which the data in the graph is added up. You can choose Day, Week, Month, Quarter and Year. Each bar or point of the graph then corresponds to one such interval: with Week selected, one bar is the total for a whole week.

The interval only changes the breakdown in the graph. The total number on the card stays the same, because it is calculated for the whole selected period.

Choose the interval according to the length of the period. A one-year period broken down by days draws more than three hundred values and the graph stops being readable; broken down by months you get twelve clear bars.

On pages that show a table instead of graphs (for example a list of posts or campaigns), the interval button is not displayed. There the period decides which rows make it into the table.

Comparison with the previous period

On cards with a value there is a coloured badge with a percentage on the right, for example + 12.4 %. It is a comparison with the period that precedes the selected one: gas calculates the same metric once more for the comparison period and shows the difference in percent.

  • A green badge means a change for the better, a red one for the worse. The direction follows the metric, so for values where a decrease is desirable, green appears with a negative number.
  • A grey badge with a dash or a zero means the comparison gives no result. Either the data for the comparison period is missing, or it was zero there and a percentage change from zero cannot be calculated.

How to find out which period is being compared

Hover the mouse over the coloured badge, or tap it on a touchscreen. A bubble opens with three items: Selected period with the value and the specific dates, Comparison period with the value and dates, and Difference in absolute numbers. That way you have the exact days of both periods written out and do not have to work them out yourself.

Which period is used for the comparison

By default gas takes a period of the same length that immediately precedes the selected one. With Last 7 days, the comparison is therefore against the seven days before them.

You can change this in Settings → User profile → Graph view, in the Previous period range field:

  • Default: a period of the same length right before the selected one.
  • Year-on-year comparison: the same days one year earlier.
  • Month-on-month comparison: the same days one month earlier.

gas uses the year-on-year comparison for periods no longer than a year, and the month-on-month comparison for periods no longer than a month. For a longer period the comparison is not shown on some cards.

On the same page you can switch on the Show previous period data option, which adds a second series with the comparison period to the graphs, and along with it Split comparison axis, which gives each series its own vertical axis labelled Current and Comparison. On a phone the second series is not drawn, the graph there is simplified.

The graph settings belong to your user account, so they also apply after you log in on another computer and in all customer accounts you have access to.

Campaigns and goals have an extra switch

On the Campaigns and Goals pages there is one more button next to the period selection, which on mouse hover shows the label Only campaigns in this period (for goals Only goals in this period). When it is switched on, only campaigns that fall entirely within the selected period stay in the list. When it is switched off, you also see campaigns that only overlap the period, that is they started earlier or will end later.

What happens next

As soon as you change the period, the page loads the data again on its own. Nothing has to be confirmed and nothing is saved anywhere.

The choice of period and interval applies to the whole application: when you go from Overview to Facebook or to Google Ads, it stays set and you do not have to enter it again.

gas remembers the choice in your browser, not with your user account. That means:

  • It is kept when you move between pages and after you reload the page.
  • It is also kept after you sign out and log in again on the same computer and in the same browser.
  • It is kept even after you switch the customer account. So you will see the data of the other account for the same period.
  • On another computer, in another browser or after clearing the browser data, gas starts again with Last 7 days. The same happens after you close the browser completely and start it again, unless the browser restores the last session by itself.

Common problems

Today is missing from the period

For social networks the preset periods end yesterday, for YouTube and part of the Pinterest data a few days earlier still. This is not an error: the platforms publish complete daily figures with a delay and gas prefers to show closed days rather than unfinished ones. For advertising systems you do see today.

Today's number is low and grows during the day

If you use a custom range to select a period ending today, the last day has not finished yet and its value is still being added up. On top of that the platforms correct the figures for the last few days retroactively, so the value may still change the next day. For comparable results choose a period ending yesterday or earlier. When exactly gas downloads the data from the individual networks is described in the article on the data update frequency.

There is no data for an older period

gas only shows what it managed to download from the platform. A period that reaches back before the profile was connected to the customer account may therefore stay empty or incomplete.

Part of the history fills in by itself after connecting, but each network goes back differently far, because each platform releases history of a different age:

  • Facebook page, Instagram profile and Meta Ads account: gas fills in the missing history automatically. For Facebook it reaches roughly two years back, for Instagram 90 days, for Meta Ads about 37 months.
  • YouTube, Google Ads and Sklik: after linking, a normal data download runs, which pulls in as much history as its range covers. For YouTube, data is available as far back as 2008.
  • Pinterest: fills in by itself, because every download reads the last 90 days.
  • TikTok: does not fill in history, the data starts on the day of connection.

Values that the platform provides only as a current state (for example the number of fans) cannot be filled in retroactively.

The period reaches into the time before connecting and the numbers look nonsensical

When the selected period starts earlier than the profile was connected, only the part for which data exists is added up. The total for such a period is therefore lower and the comparison with the previous period comes out distorted. Choose a period that starts only after the profile was connected.

The graph is empty even though the card shows a number

Check the selected interval. When the period is shorter than the interval (for example three days and the Month interval), the graph has nothing to draw in steps. Switch the interval to Day.

There is a dash instead of a percentage on the card

gas has no data for the comparison period, or it was zero there. This happens mainly with freshly connected profiles, where the period before the selected one has no data yet.

The interval switched to another one by itself

This happens after you manually select a custom range in the calendar: gas sets the interval according to the period you started from. Set it back with the interval button next to the period selection.

I cannot see the period selection button

Either you are on a page that does not work with a period (Settings, linked accounts), or you are looking at the print version, where the controls are not displayed. On a phone the buttons are smaller and show only icons; look for the narrow bar below the page title.

I selected a period in the future and nothing loaded

The calendar lets you mark future days too, but there is no data for them. Select a period that ends today at the latest.

The custom range was not confirmed

A custom range is entered with two clicks: the first day marks the start, the second the end. Until you click the second time, the menu stays open and the period does not change. If you need a single day, click the same date a second time.

The numbers did not change after I changed the period

Some pages have their own profile selection and without a selected profile the data does not load. Check that a profile is selected on the left in the page header. If everything is set and the numbers still have not refreshed, click the button for refreshing the data next to the period selection.
