The Subject ratings section brings together, in one place, the public ratings of accommodation providers, gastronomy establishments and tourist attractions located in your destination. Once a month, gas downloads ratings from five portals, converts them to a common scale from 0 to 5 and calculates a single overall score from them. That way you can see how individual subjects and the destination as a whole are doing, and whether the rating has improved or worsened compared with the previous month.
Before you start
- Your customer account must have a plan with the tourism module and a configured area (region, destination management organisation or municipality). Setting up the area is described in the article Destination management setup.
- Anyone on the team can view the ratings, that is the Administrator, User and Viewer roles.
- Only an Administrator may add, edit, merge and delete subjects.
Where to find the section
- In the left menu open Tourism data and click Subject ratings.
- In the bar above the table choose which area you want to display: Region, Destination management, or Municipality. Only the ones configured for your customer account are offered.
- In the second selector choose the specific area. Its name then appears as the page heading.
- The table loads with all subjects located in the municipalities of the selected area.
Which subjects the section tracks
Every subject belongs to one of three categories, which you can see in the Category column:
| Category | What belongs to it |
|---|---|
| Accommodation providers | hotels, guesthouses, campsites and other accommodation facilities; only for these is the number of stars and the Booking.com rating recorded |
| Gastronomy establishments | restaurants, cafés, bars and other food and drink establishments |
| Tourist attractions | attractions, museums, lookout towers, castles and similar places |
In the form for adding a subject the same categories are named Accommodation, Gastronomy and Attraction.
A subject is tied to the municipality it is located in, not to your customer account. The list is therefore shared: the same subjects are visible to every customer account that has the same region, the same destination management organisation or the same municipality configured.
Where the ratings come from
| Source | Who it applies to |
|---|---|
| Google (place on Google Maps) | all categories |
| Facebook (the subject's page) | all categories |
| TripAdvisor | all categories |
| Firmy.cz | all categories |
| Booking.com | Accommodation providers only |
For every subject, a link or identifier is stored for those portals on which someone has found it. A portal that is not filled in stays empty both in the table and on the detail page.
Data collection runs once a month, always at the turn of the month. Above the table, gas therefore states the end of which month the displayed figures come from, and the trend arrow compares this month with the previous one.
The ratings are public figures from the listed portals. They are not collected through your linked accounts, so you do not have to link anything for this section and you do not have to be an administrator of the subject's page.
How to read the table
On the left there are the descriptive columns Name, Municipality and Category. The Region, DMO and Actions columns are hidden and you switch them on in the column selector in the bar above the table.
Next come six pairs of columns: Weighted total, Facebook, TripAdvisor, Google, Firmy.cz and Booking. Each pair contains:
- Rating, that is the average score on a scale from 0 to 5 (to two decimal places for the weighted total, to one for individual portals),
- Reviews, that is the number of ratings the score is calculated from.
The arrow next to the figure shows the month-on-month change: green up means an improvement, yellow down a slight drop and red down a more significant drop. When you hover over a cell, the exact change compared with the previous month is displayed.
At the very bottom there is a bold Summary row. It is not a plain average of the column, but a weighted average across all rows that have passed the current filter, plus the sum of their reviews. The table is preset to sort by the Weighted total column, starting from the best rating.
Why the weighted total differs from the figure on the portal
The Weighted total column is not an average of the scores from the portals. It is calculated as a weighted average in which each portal is weighted by its number of reviews. A portal with a thousand reviews therefore influences the result far more than a portal with ten reviews.
So that the scores can be added together, gas converts them to a single scale from 0 to 5:
- Booking.com rates on a scale up to 10, so its score is divided by two. A rating of 8.6 on Booking becomes 4.3 in gas.
- Firmy.cz states ratings as a percentage, which is converted to the scale up to 5. 90% becomes 4.5.
- For many pages, Facebook states the share of people who recommend the page, and that is converted to the scale up to 5 as well.
- Google and TripAdvisor rate up to 5 stars, so their figures are not converted.
There is a second reason for the difference from the portal: the displayed figures are the state at the end of the stated month, whereas on the portal you see today.
Subject detail
Clicking a subject's name in the table opens its detail page. There you will find:
- Cards for the individual sources. The first is the Weighted total card, followed by a card for every portal filled in for the subject. The card shows the rating, the number of reviews, the month-on-month change and a button that opens the subject's profile directly on that portal in a new window. If the portal returned no figure for that month, a dash is shown instead of a value.
- Stars next to the name for accommodation providers. This is the official accommodation class, not a guest rating.
- A trend graph. With the switch above the graph you choose between the Rating and Reviews views. The Weighted total curve is always drawn, the individual portals are hidden and you display them by clicking their name in the legend below the graph. Drag the mouse across the graph to zoom in on a shorter period.
- A history table by month, with the newest month at the top and columns for the weighted total and for every portal.
- A printer button in the top right (on a computer), or the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+P, Cmd+P on a Mac. gas first calculates the data and prepares the printable version of the page, and only then opens the print dialog.
- A pencil button in the top right, which opens the subject settings.
On a phone only the cards are displayed and gas notes below them that detailed historical data is available in the desktop version. Open the graph and the history table on a computer or tablet.
Adding and editing a subject
Only an Administrator may add and edit subjects.
- Above the table click Add entity.
- Fill in the Subject name (3 to 40 characters) and choose a Category. For accommodation you can set the Number of stars.
- Fill in at least one portal: Google Place (search for the place by name), Booking.com page (accommodation only), TripAdvisor page, Firmy.cz page or Facebook URL or ID. Without a single portal filled in the subject cannot be saved, because there would be nowhere to take ratings from.
- Choose the Municipality the subject is located in. After you select a place on Google, the municipality is often prefilled automatically.
- Save with the Add entity button.
If a similar subject already exists, gas says so right next to the field (for example "A subject with a similar name ... already exists.") and it also warns you about an identical portal address or an identical place on Google. Pay attention to these messages so that two records for the same hotel do not end up in the list.
For a subject that has already been saved, the category cannot be changed; the other details can.
A newly filled-in portal will only show up in the figures after the next monthly collection. Until then there is a dash next to it, even though you can see the rating on the portal itself.
Merging duplicate records
When the same hotel or restaurant is in the list twice, an Administrator can merge the records into one.
- In the table tick at least two rows. They must be from the same category, otherwise the button stays unavailable.
- Above the table click Merge.
- Choose the Main record (keep) and for each field decide which value will be used, or enter your own.
- Confirm with the Merge records button.
Just like deletion, a merge takes effect for all customer accounts with the same region, destination management organisation or municipality and cannot be undone.
Deleting ratings
Only an Administrator may delete. Neither the User nor the Viewer has the delete buttons available.
- You delete a single subject via the Actions column. If you cannot see it in the table, switch it on in the column selector in the bar above the table, then click the bin icon in the row.
- You delete several subjects at once by ticking their rows and clicking Delete selected above the table.
- In both cases a confirmation dialog opens in which you confirm the action.
Deleting is not hiding from your own view. The subject and its whole rating history for all months are removed, and the change takes effect for all customer accounts that have the same region, destination management organisation or municipality. The action is irreversible: you can create the subject again, but the collected history will not come back and new figures will only start to appear with the next monthly collection. So delete only genuine duplicates and subjects that no longer exist. For two records about the same place, merging is the better choice.
Common problems
I cannot see Subject ratings in the menu
The section belongs to the tourism module. If the whole Tourism data item is missing from the left menu, your customer account does not have this module in its plan, or it has no area configured. Write to us through the contact form, we will be glad to sort it out with you.
The table is empty
Most often a different area is selected than the one the subjects are located in. Check both selectors above the table, that is the area type and the specific area. The second common cause is a filter switched on in the header of one of the columns, so clear the filters and the whole table will load.
A specific subject is missing from the list
Subjects are recorded by municipality, so a subject in a municipality outside your area will not appear in the list. If it does lie within your area and is still missing, nobody has created it yet and an Administrator can add it with the Add entity button. It may also be missing because someone merged it with another record, so check whether it is in the list under a slightly different name.
The score does not match the figure on the portal
The weighted total mixes all portals together and weights them by the number of reviews, so it does not have to match any individual portal. But even an individual portal's column can differ, because Booking.com rates up to 10 and Firmy.cz in percent, and gas converts both to the scale up to 5. On top of that, the displayed figures are the state at the end of the stated month, not from today.
There is a dash instead of a rating for a subject
Either that portal is not filled in for the subject, or the subject has no reviews there yet, or its page could not be loaded during the last collection (typically when its address changed or it was removed). Open the subject detail, click the button for that portal and check where it leads. If it does not lead to the correct page, an Administrator can fix the link in the subject settings and the figures will be filled in with the next monthly collection.
A newly added subject has no data
That is expected. Collection runs once a month at the turn of the month, so the first figures will only appear after it. The same applies when you add another portal to an existing subject.
The figures do not change for a whole month
This is also expected behaviour, not a fault. Ratings are updated once a month, so the refresh button next to the heading will load the same figures again. You will see changes after the next collection at the turn of the month.
I cannot see the edit and delete buttons in the table
The Actions column is hidden by default, switch it on in the column selector in the bar above the table. If you can see the column but the icons are unavailable, you do not have the Administrator role in this customer account.
The Merge button cannot be clicked
Only two or more records from the same category can be merged. If you have a single row ticked, or rows from different categories, the button stays unavailable and hovering over it shows the explanation "Only records of the same category can be merged". What is more, only an Administrator may merge.
The Booking column is completely empty
Booking.com is only collected for the Accommodation providers category. For gastronomy establishments and tourist attractions the column will always stay empty. For an accommodation provider, an empty value means that no Booking.com page is filled in for it.
In the report there is an Other row instead of half the subjects
In the report settings, the Tourism section has the Filter less relevant subjects option for the Subject ratings subsection. When it is ticked, only subjects with a sufficient number of reviews stay in the table (at least 15% of the highest number of reviews in that category) and all the others are added together into a single summary row, Other. You switch the option off in the settings of that report section, and then all subjects are listed.
The graph and history are missing on a phone
On a phone, only the cards for the individual sources are displayed on the detail page, because the wide table and the graph do not fit on the screen. Open the page on a computer or tablet.
After deletion the subject disappeared for colleagues from another organisation too
The list of subjects is shared by all customer accounts that have the same region, destination management organisation or municipality. Deleting and merging therefore affect them too and cannot be undone. If you deleted something you did not mean to delete, write to us through the contact form.
