The tourism module: who it is for and what it contains

The tourism module is the part of gas intended for destination management organisations, regions, tourist areas and municipalities. The rest of the application tracks the performance of your own social network profiles and your ad accounts. This module is different: it describes the whole territory you manage. How many tourists came, how many nights they spent there, how much money they spent and how accommodation providers, restaurants and tourist attractions in the territory are rated.

In the left-hand menu of the application the section is called Tourism data.

If you use gas to manage the profiles of a brand, an online shop or a company and have nothing to do with destination management, this module does not concern you and you will not see it in the menu.

Before you start

For the Tourism data section to appear in the menu, both of the following must be true at the same time:

  1. The customer account has paid for the module. Either it is on the Tourism plan, or it has the Tourism module CZ add-on attached to another plan.
  2. The customer account has a link to a specific territory. The link is always to one level: to a Region, to a Destination management organisation (the organisation that manages a tourist area, in some places the application uses the abbreviation DMO for it) or to a Municipality.

You cannot set up either of these yourself in the application, both are entered by Good Agency. If something is missing, write through the contact form and state which customer account it concerns and which territory it should track.

The plan alone is not enough. As long as the link to a region, destination management organisation or municipality is missing, the module has no data to display and the application will send you back to Overview.

How to check what your account has set up

  1. Open Settings → Customer account → Subscription.
  2. Find the Tourism data block on the page.
  3. The Scope item shows the level of the link: Region, DMO or Municipality. Below it is a list of the specific territories the account is linked to.
  4. If, instead of a list, you see the sentence "No tourism entities are currently linked to this plan.", the link is missing and has to be added.

The Tourism data block is shown on the Subscription page for customer accounts on the Tourism plan. If you use the module as an add-on to another plan, you can tell whether it is available by whether the Tourism data section is in the left-hand menu.

What the module contains

The Tourism data section in the menu expands into several subsections. Which of them you see depends on the level of the link: an account linked to a region has the most available, an account linked only to a municipality only some of them.

  • Data: the main overview of indicators. At the top you choose an indicator (for example Tourists CAE, that is tourists in collective accommodation establishments, Overnight stays of tourists CAE, Day-trippers, Total visitors, Tourism revenue, Average length of stay or Stay fee) and the territory you want to see it for. Below the selection there is a chart of the year-by-year development and a table with a year-on-year comparison. The individual indicators are explained in the article Tourism data and indicators.
  • Destination comparison: a table that puts your destination next to the others in the region and shows where you are growing and where you are falling behind. It is described in the article Destination comparison.
  • Map: a colour map of the municipalities in your territory. The colours distinguish the individual tourist areas, municipalities outlined in red are those without a contract. It is covered by the article Map.
  • Subject ratings: a list of accommodation providers, gastronomy venues and tourist attractions in your territory with ratings from Facebook, Google, TripAdvisor, Booking and Firmy.cz and with a weighted total. Details are in the article Subject ratings.
  • Certification: this section is still being prepared, for now it only contains a notice that it is not finished. Once it is, it will be described in the article Certification.
  • Report: a summary page for the selected year and territory that you can print. It is described in the article Tourism report.

Tourism data can also be included in the automatically generated PDF report, where it has its own sections. That is also described in the article Tourism report.

The name of the destination management organisation and the hashtags used to filter its posts and campaigns are set in Settings → Customer account → Destination management. This is covered by the article Destination management settings.

Where the data comes from and how often it is updated

This is the most important difference from the rest of the application. The figures from social networks and ad accounts are your own and arrive in gas several times a day. Tourism data, on the other hand, is public statistics about a territory and changes roughly once a month or once a year.

The sources the module draws on:

  • Czech Statistical Office: data on collective accommodation establishments (CAE), that is hotels, guesthouses and campsites. This is where the numbers of tourists, overnight stays, beds, rooms and tent pitches come from.
  • Surveys by the CzechTourism agency: tourists in individual accommodation establishments (IAE, that is for example staying with friends, with family or through Airbnb), day-trippers, average spending and the tourism revenue calculated from it.
  • Ministry of Finance of the Czech Republic: the stay fee, a local tax collected by municipalities.
  • Tourdata: supplementary data on domestic and inbound tourism.
  • Facebook, Google, TripAdvisor, Booking and Firmy.cz: ratings and reviews of individual subjects.

Update frequency:

  • Tourism data is annual. The most recent year available is usually the previous one, because statistics for the current year do not exist yet. We add new data to gas once a year, usually in April.
  • Subject ratings are loaded once a month, always at the turn of the month. The figures shown are from the end of the previous month and the trend compares two neighbouring months.

If a value in the tourism data does not change for several months, it is neither an error nor an outage. Annual statistics simply do not change more often.

What you see after opening the section

As soon as the module is active and the link is set up, Tourism data appears in the left-hand menu. If you do not see it there right after the setup, refresh the page in your browser.

After clicking Data, a page opens with the indicator selection and the territory selection at the top. In the card below it you will at first see the sentence "No metric is selected. Select a metric to display data." Once you select an indicator, a chart is drawn and below it a table with the values for the individual years.

Next to the indicator selection there is a level switch (Region, Destination management, Municipality) and the selection of a specific territory. The switch and the selection are only shown when you have more than one option to choose from.

The list of territories follows the account link. A link to a region also gives you access to the destination management organisations and municipalities in that region, a link to a destination management organisation also gives you access to its municipalities, a link to a municipality gives you access to that one municipality only.

Common problems

I cannot see any Tourism data in the left-hand menu

Either the module is not enabled for your customer account, or it has no link to a territory. Check the status using the procedure above and write through the contact form stating which customer account it concerns and which territory it should track.

The section is in the menu, but after opening it the application sends me back to Overview

Along with that you will see the message "You do not have access defined to any destination management organisation or region." It means the module is enabled, but no region, destination management organisation or municipality is connected to the customer account. Request the link through the contact form.

After entering the page address I get the message Access to this page was denied

The tourism pages can only be reached with the module enabled, even if you type the address manually. The application sends you back to Overview. The solution is the same as above: check the plan and the link, and write through the contact form if needed.

The section disappeared after I switched the customer account

The module is enabled for each customer account separately. If you manage several accounts and only one of them has tourism data, the section appears and disappears in the menu depending on which account you currently have selected.

Only some subsections are missing from the menu

The level of the link determines what makes sense to show at all. Destination comparison, Map and Report work with a whole region or with a destination management organisation, so they are not offered to an account linked only to a municipality. If you believe your account should see more, write through the contact form.

The figures have not changed at all for several months

Tourism data is annual statistics, not daily measurement. A new value is added once a year, after the source publishes it and we enter it into gas, which is usually in April. So an unchanging number is not a sign of a fault.

The value for an older year does not match an earlier output from the same source

The surveys that some of the indicators are based on are revised retroactively. gas shows the value as it stood at the time it was entered into the database. A difference from an older document can therefore arise even when it is the same year and the same source.

Subject ratings have not changed since last week

Ratings are loaded once a month, always at the turn of the month. The figures shown are from the end of the previous month, so they do not change during the month. The page itself states which month the data is from.

There is nothing in Certification

The section is still being prepared. For now it only shows the sentence "This part of the system is not finished yet. We are working on it." Once it is finished, we will describe it in a separate article.

I cannot see figures from my Facebook or from my ads in the module

The tourism module works with statistics about a territory, not with your profiles. You will find the performance of pages, profiles and ad accounts in their own sections in the left-hand menu, outside Tourism data.

I cannot add or delete a subject in Subject ratings

Only the Administrator role may add and delete subjects. With the User or Viewer role the relevant buttons are not shown to you. Ask the administrator of your customer account to do it, or to change your role.

Detailed tables are not shown on my phone

The parts with the detailed historical development are only available in the desktop version and the application notes this in the text there. Open the page on a computer.
