Destination comparison

Destination comparison puts all destination management organisations in one region side by side and shows how each of them is doing in local subject ratings and in tourism data. It comes in handy when you need to say not only "five per cent more tourists came to us", but also "and ten per cent more went to our neighbours". The comparison tells you whether a rise or a fall is happening across the whole region, or only in your area.

Before you start

  • You will find Destination comparison in the left menu under Tourism data. It is only offered to customer accounts linked to a region or to a destination management organisation. A link to a municipality alone is not enough for this page.
  • To check what your customer account is linked to, go to Settings → Customer account → Destination management. The links are set up by Good Agency, so arrange any change through the contact form.
  • Anyone on the team can view the table, that is the Administrator, User and Viewer roles. Nothing is created or deleted on this page.
  • The comparison does not draw on your linked social network accounts. The numbers come from public statistics and from subject ratings that gas collects itself, so you do not need to link anything for it.

Steps

  1. In the left menu expand Tourism data and click Destination comparison.
  2. At the top left, next to the page title, use the first field to choose the view: Region or Destination management. The field only appears if you have both available.
  3. In the second field choose a specific region or destination management organisation. The field can search, just start typing the name. This field also appears only when there is something to choose from, that is when you have more than one option.
  4. Wait for the table to load. The name of the region the comparison relates to appears in the page title.

Whether you choose a region or a single destination management organisation, the table always shows the whole region. When you choose a destination management organisation, gas looks up the region it belongs to and compares it with all the other destination management organisations in that region. So you do not pick destinations one by one, the whole region enters the comparison at once.

What happens next

Each row of the table is one destination management organisation from the selected region. Right at the bottom there is a bold Whole region row, the summary for the whole territory. The name of your own destination management organisation is in bold in the first column, so you can find your row quickly. For destination management organisations you have in your customer account, the name can be clicked and their detail opens. The other rows are there only for comparison and have no link.

The columns come in two parts.

Subject ratings has four groups of columns: Weighted total, Accommodation providers, Gastro venues and Tourist attractions. Each group has two columns: Rating (the average score to two decimal places) and Reviews (the number of ratings the score is based on). The weighted total is the summary of all three categories together.

Tourism data contains four columns:

  • Tourists CAE: the number of tourists who stayed overnight in collective accommodation establishments, that is hotels, guesthouses and similar businesses. The statistics are compiled by the Czech Statistical Office.
  • Tourists IAE: the number of tourists who stayed overnight in individual accommodation establishments, for example with friends, with family or in a rented flat. Based on surveys by the CzechTourism agency.
  • Day-trippers: visitors who did not stay overnight in the area.
  • Stay fee: the local stay fee collected by municipalities from overnight guests.

How to read the arrows next to numbers

A number may have a coloured arrow next to it showing the change against the previous period:

  • green arrow up: the value has risen,
  • yellow arrow down: the value has fallen only slightly, by less than one per cent,
  • red arrow down: the value has fallen more sharply,
  • no arrow: the value has not changed, or there is nothing to compare it with.

When you hover over a number, the exact difference against the previous period is shown, with a plus or minus sign.

Which periods are compared

Below the table there is a note with the specific periods. Two different rules apply there:

  • Subject ratings show the state at the end of last month and are compared with the month before that.
  • Tourism data cover the whole last completed calendar year and are compared with the year before. So tourism data are compared year on year.

The period cannot be switched on this page. The year selection you know from the Report page has no effect on the comparison.

What you can do with the table

  • Sort: by default the table is sorted by the Weighted total, Rating column, from the highest score. Click a header to sort by any other column.
  • Filter: the rating and review columns have a number filter in the header, so you can keep only values above four, for example. The Clear filters button brings back the full list.
  • Hide columns: use the Columns button above the table on the right. gas remembers the setting for your next visit too.
  • Enter fullscreen: the button with arrows pointing into the corners.
  • Export and print: the Export CSV, Export Excel and Print buttons above the table on the right. You can also start printing with the Ctrl+P shortcut (Cmd+P on a Mac), a confirmation appears and then the print version of the table.

On a phone, instead of the wide table you see a list of cards with the destination name, rating and number of reviews. The complete table is visible on a computer.

Destination comparison for social networks

There is one more, smaller table with the same name. You will find it below the graph on the detail of selected social network metrics, and it compares destinations in terms of how the posts belonging to them are doing.

  • It is only shown to customer accounts with the tourism module and only for metrics that can be split by destination: on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and Pinterest for values such as reach, impressions, video views, engagements or saved. For metrics that belong to the whole profile (the number of followers, for example) the table does not appear.
  • Posts are assigned to destinations by the hashtags each destination management organisation has set up. A post without such a hashtag is not counted towards any destination.
  • The columns are Destination, Trend (a small development curve), a column with the selected metric (a number accompanied by a bar so the ratio is visible at a glance) and Share in per cent.
  • Above the table on the left there is a Select destinations field. By default all destinations available to you are selected, and their number is not limited.
  • The table works with the period set at the top of the page. When you change the period, it is recalculated.

Common problems

You cannot see Destination comparison in the menu

The page is only offered to customer accounts linked to a region or to a destination management organisation. If your account is linked only to a municipality, the comparison is not available. Write to us through the contact form and we will go through the links together.

The Overview opened instead of the comparison, with a message about missing access

The message "You do not have access defined to any destination management organisation or region" means that no area from which the comparison could be built is linked to the customer account. Check in Settings → Customer account → Destination management what is linked, and get in touch through the contact form.

The destination you are looking for is not in the selection at the top

The selection contains only areas linked to your customer account, and on top of that only those that have a region assigned. That is why you will not find neighbouring destination management organisations there, but you will see them in the table: as soon as you choose your destination, gas adds all the others from the same region. If even your own area is missing from the selection, write through the contact form.

The Region and Destination management switch is not shown

Both fields at the top only appear when there is something to choose from. If your customer account has a single destination management organisation and no region, gas shows the comparison for it straight away and offers no field. This is not an error.

The table did not load at all

If only the title stays on the page and there is no table anywhere, gas has no area selected from which to derive the region. Reload the page and choose a region or destination management organisation in the selection at the top. If you cannot see the selection fields, the previous point applies.

Tourism data show zeros

The Czech Statistical Office and the CzechTourism agency publish tourism data with a delay, so the last completed year is usually only complete during the spring. The comparison always works with the last completed calendar year, which is why values may be zero or incomplete in the first months of the year. Subject ratings are updated every month and this does not affect them.

A change of year had no effect on the comparison

The comparison has fixed periods: ratings as at the end of last month and tourism data for the last completed year. The year switch from the Report page has no influence here. You can always check the specific periods in the note below the table.

The rating cell is empty for some destinations

An empty cell means that gas has no rated subjects for that area for the given month. Zero and an empty cell are not the same thing: zero is a measured value, empty means nothing was measured. This is described in more detail in the Subject ratings article.

A neighbouring destination has completely different numbers and the comparison makes no sense

A single region contains areas of very different sizes, from a few municipalities to a whole tourist region, so absolute numbers can differ several times over. It is more useful to watch the direction and size of the change, that is the arrows and the difference shown when you hover over a number. The Whole region row is the sum for the whole territory, not a competing destination, so your numbers should be read against it as a share of the region, not as a better or worse result.

You want to compare a municipality with the region

The table only ever puts destination management organisations within one region side by side, municipalities do not have their own rows in it. You will find data for a municipality in the Tourism data section on the Data page, where you can switch to the Municipality view. Do not put municipality and region numbers against each other manually, they are units of different size and some values for municipalities are calculated from regional inputs.

The arrow has a different colour than you expected

The colour distinguishes the size of the fall, not its significance: yellow is a fall of less than one per cent, red a larger one. With ratings, which move by tenths of a point, a yellow arrow therefore usually means normal fluctuation. You will see the exact difference when you hover over the number.

The Destination comparison table is not shown for a network

Either the customer account does not have the tourism module, or it is a metric that cannot be split by destination (typically values for the whole profile, such as the number of followers), or no profile is selected. Try the same page for a metric such as reach, impressions or engagements.

The table for a network disappeared after you changed the destination selection

If you clear all items in the Select destinations field, the table has nothing to show and hides together with that field. Reload the page and the selection returns to its default state with all destinations.

The trend curve is missing for some destinations in the network table

The curve is only drawn where gas has daily data for at least several consecutive days. For shorter series the cell stays empty, but the number in the neighbouring column is valid. The tooltip shown when you hover over the Trend column header says the same.

The share for a network does not match the total number for the profile

The share is calculated only from posts that could be assigned to a destination by hashtag. Posts without a hashtag do not enter the total, which is why the total tends to be lower than the value for the whole profile. If too much is missing from the total, check whether the posts really contain the destination hashtag.

You can see only some of the columns on a phone

On a small screen the table is shown as cards with the destination name, rating and number of reviews. The complete table, including tourism data, filters, export and print, is visible on a computer.
