Notifications in the application

Notifications are short messages gas uses to tell you what has happened in the application or what needs your attention. Most often it is a problem with a network connection, a finished report, or confirmation of an action you performed yourself. You read notifications directly in the application under the bell icon, and some of them are also sent by e-mail to the address you use to log in.

Where to find notifications

The bell is in the top bar on the right and is visible on every page of the application. When you have unread notifications, a red circle with their count lights up next to it. As soon as a new message arrives, the bell shakes briefly.

  1. Click the bell in the right part of the top bar. A panel titled Notifications opens.
  2. The panel shows the last twenty notifications you have not closed. Unread ones have a highlighted row and a filled circle on the left.
  3. Click a notification title to open its detail with the full text.
  4. The Manage all notifications button at the bottom of the panel takes you to the page with the complete list.

On a phone and a smaller tablet you will find the bell in the bottom navigation bar under the name Notifications. The list opens across the whole screen. There is no button to the complete list here, open the full history page on a computer.

Next to the Notifications heading there is a small dot. Green means the application is connected to the server and new notifications appear on their own, without reloading the page. Orange means the connection is not established at the moment. In that case the list reloads roughly once a minute, so you will not miss anything, it will just be delayed.

The page with the complete list

The Notifications page also shows older and closed notifications that are no longer in the bell panel. At the top there are four switches: All, Unread, Read and Closed. The table has the columns Title, Type, Status and Created, and you can filter and sort it. Ticking rows enables the bulk actions Mark selected as read and Close selected.

What the number on the bell means

The number on the bell is the count of notifications you have not read yet and have not closed either. A closed notification is not counted, even if it stayed unread. The number goes down on its own as soon as you mark notifications as read, close them, or they close by themselves once the problem is gone. When there are more than ninety-nine unread ones, 99+ is shown.

The bell panel shows at most twenty recent notifications, but the number counts all of them. When the number on the bell is higher than the number of rows you see in the panel, you will find the rest on the Notifications page under the Unread switch.

How to mark a notification as read

Marking as read is just a note for you that you have seen the message. The notification stays in the list, it only stops being highlighted and is no longer counted on the bell. There are several ways to do it and they all lead to the same result.

  1. Click the circle on the left of the notification. The same click can set it back to unread.
  2. Or, on a computer, leave the mouse pointer on the notification for about three seconds and gas marks it for you.
  3. Or click the notification title. In the open detail it marks itself after two seconds.
  4. Or use the Mark all as read button in the panel header. It marks all your unread notifications, not just the twenty shown.
  5. On the Notifications page, tick the selected rows and click Mark selected as read.

How to close a notification

Closing means "we no longer need to deal with this". A closed notification disappears from the bell panel and stays on the Notifications page under the Closed switch. You can close a notification with the cross in its top right corner, or on the Notifications page with the Close selected button.

Closing cannot be undone, a notification cannot be reopened. It stays findable under the Closed switch, though, so you will not lose its content.

Closing has one more consequence worth knowing. As long as a notification about some problem is open, gas does not send further messages about the same problem so as not to flood you. Once you close it, the next occurrence of the same problem will be reported to you again.

Which events gas reports

Notifications often have a blue button under the text that takes you straight to where the matter is handled, for example Open integration settings or Open reports.

You connected, renamed or unlinked a profile

This arrives as confirmation of an action you have just performed in linked accounts, for example "Page was successfully linked", "Profile was successfully renamed to " or "Profile has been scheduled for deletion". You do not have to do anything, it is only confirmation that the change was saved.

Profiles automatically relinked

This arrives when you log in to a linked service again (Meta, Google or Pinterest) and gas puts back into operation the profiles and accounts that used to run under that connection. The text lists them and states that their data will be downloaded again. You do not have to do anything, just check that the list really contains all the profiles you expected.

Connection to a network paused

The most important notification of all. It arrives when the platform revoked the access gas uses to download your data: the login expired, someone removed the access in the network settings, or the account status changed. The title reads, for example, "Connection to Meta paused". From that moment data for the affected profiles stops being downloaded.

The text contains the date by which the connection needs to be restored. The deadline is fourteen days from the pause, after which gas removes the related data. Click the button in the notification, which takes you to the connected services settings, and log in to the platform again. The detailed procedure is in the article Reconnecting after access expires.

The connection is still inactive

A reminder about the previous notification. It arrives when the connection remains paused and the data removal date is approaching. The text contains the date and the number of days remaining. The solution is the same: restore the connection in the connected services settings.

Connection restored

This arrives after you log in again to a paused connection. It confirms that the connection is active again and that your data has been kept, the scheduled removal was cancelled. You do not have to do anything.

Network synchronisation needs attention

This arrives when the connection as a whole is fine, but a permission is missing for a specific profile, page, channel or ad account. Typically someone on the platform removed your role for one page while you still have access to the others. The text contains the name of the affected profile. Check your permissions for that profile directly on the platform in question (its administrator sets them), or link the connection again in the settings.

Connection needs to be restored because of a report

This arrives to the owner of the connection when a generated report could not load data from a network because the connection is no longer active. The procedure is the same as for a paused connection: log in to the platform again in the connected services settings.

Report skipped an unlinked profile

This arrives when the report was generated and sent, but a profile is missing from it because its connection is not active. The title contains the report name, the text the name of the skipped profile. The profile needs to be linked again. The report is then completed automatically, see the next notification. The whole topic is covered in the article When a report is missing or incomplete.

Report was completed and generated again

This arrives after you have linked the previously skipped profile again and gas therefore generated the report once more, now complete. You will find the complete version in the reports section, the button in the notification takes you there.

Report is ready to download

This arrives as soon as the PDF report is finished: either the one you started manually or the scheduled one. The title reads "Report ready: ". The button in the notification opens the file download.

The customer account has used up its plan limit

This arrives to administrators of the customer account when regular data processing hits the plan ceiling and therefore had to skip some items. It concerns the number of profiles in one network, goals, campaigns, custom measurements, media monitorings and analysed pages. For the same limit it arrives at most once a week. You can see the current usage in Settings → Customer account → Subscription in the Limits and usage part. Either unneeded items have to be removed, or the plan has to be extended; we will advise you through the contact form.

Alerts from the original version of the application

gas currently runs alongside an older version that has its own access monitoring. Its messages appear among the notifications with titles such as "Problem with access to the Meta network", "Problem with access to Instagram" or "Google Ads account access error". In the Type column they are marked as Alert. They mean the same as the other integration messages: data cannot be obtained for some profile and you need to check the permissions or restore the connection.

Notifications that close by themselves

You do not have to click away notifications about connection problems. As soon as the cause is gone, gas closes them for you:

  • Messages about a paused connection close when you log in to that connection again.
  • Messages about a profile skipped in a report and about a missing permission for a profile close as soon as the profile is linked again or synchronises successfully for the first time.

For you this means two things. First: the number on the bell goes down on its own shortly after you solve the problem, even if you leave the application open and reload nothing. Second: if a notification about a problem has not disappeared, the problem is still there, even if you think you have solved it. In that case open Settings → Customer account → Linked accounts and check the status of the affected profile.

Other notifications, that is confirmations of actions, finished reports and limit alerts, do not close by themselves. Close those manually once you no longer need them.

Who receives a notification

This is the most common source of misunderstanding: notifications do not go to everyone on the team. Most connection messages go only to the user account of the person who created that connection, because only they can restore it.

EventWho receives it
Linking, renaming or unlinking a profileonly the person who performed the action
Profiles automatically relinkedonly the person who logged in to the connection again
Paused connection, reminder, connection restoredonly the connection owner
Missing permission for a specific profileonly the connection owner
Connection needs to be restored because of a reportonly the connection owner
Report skipped an unlinked profileadministrators of the customer account and the owner of the affected connection
Report was completed and generated againadministrators of the customer account and the owners of the affected connections
Report ready to downloadthe person who started it manually; for a scheduled report its recipients according to the report settings
Plan limit used upadministrators of the customer account

An administrator means a user account that has the Administrator role for the given customer account. You can find out who owns a connection in Settings → Customer account → Linked accounts in the Who links the account column, which shows their e-mail. You can write to them straight away.

Notification settings

You set what should reach you in the application and what by e-mail in Settings → Profile → Notifications. It is chosen by groups (account linking, integration problems, reports, weekly summary) separately for the application and separately for e-mail. The article Notification settings describes it in detail.

Common problems

A colleague received a notification and I did not

Connection messages go to the connection owner, not to everyone on the team. When a colleague linked the profile in the past, alerts about its problems go to them. Look into Settings → Customer account → Linked accounts, into the Who links the account column, and you will see the owner's e-mail.

I did not receive a notification even though I can see the problem

Check Settings → Profile → Notifications. When the relevant group is turned off both for the application and for e-mail, gas does not create the notification at all and will not add it retroactively. The other possibility is that an open notification about the same problem already exists and gas therefore did not send a new one; look for it among the older ones on the Notifications page too.

There is a number on the bell, but I cannot see that many notifications in the list

The bell panel shows only the twenty newest notifications that are not closed, while the number counts all unread ones. Open the Notifications page with the Manage all notifications button and switch to Unread.

A notification disappeared on its own without me clicking anything

That is fine, that is how it should be. Notifications about connection problems close by themselves when the cause is gone. You will find them on the Notifications page under the Closed switch.

The problem continues, but no further notification arrives

As long as the previous notification about the same problem is open, gas does not send another one so as not to flood the list. Close it with the cross; at the next occurrence you will be alerted again.

I closed a notification by mistake

A closed notification cannot be returned among the active ones, but you have not lost it. Open the Notifications page and switch to Closed, you will find it there with the full text and date.

The e-mail did not arrive, but the notification is in the application

Only some groups are sent by e-mail (integration problems, reports and the weekly summary), confirmations of profile actions are not sent by e-mail at all. Check that the Email column is turned on for the group in question in Settings → Profile → Notifications, and look into your junk mail folder. E-mails go to the address you use to log in.

The notification about a finished report did not arrive even though the report exists

For a manually started report, only the person who started the generation receives the notification. For a scheduled report it goes to its recipients, that is the user accounts selected in that report's settings. If no specific people are selected in it, all user accounts of the customer account receive it. If you do not see yourself in the list of recipients, the customer account administrator will add you.

The dot next to the Notifications heading is orange

The application currently has no live connection to the server, typically after a network outage or after a longer period with the computer asleep. New notifications therefore do not appear immediately, but the list reloads by itself roughly once a minute. If you want certainty right away, refresh the page in your browser.

There is a row in the list with no title and no text

This is how the alert about a used-up plan limit is displayed for now, the one sent to administrators of the customer account. In the Type column it has the technical label app.limit.exceeded instead of a name. It means the customer account has more items than the plan allows, and some of them therefore stopped being processed. You can see the limit usage in Settings → Customer account → Subscription in the Limits and usage part, and we will advise you about adjusting the plan through the contact form.

There are many notifications and they cannot be reviewed clearly

On the Notifications page the table can be filtered by title, type, status and creation date, and rows can be selected in bulk with the checkbox. The combination of the Unread filter and the Close selected button is the fastest way to tidy up the list. Close them carefully, though: messages about connection problems close by themselves once resolved, so there is no point in closing them manually while the problem lasts.
