You open gas on a phone or tablet in the same browser you use on your computer. The interface, however, adapts to the smaller screen: controls move elsewhere, tables turn into a list of cards, and some tasks stay reserved for a computer. This article describes all the differences so you do not look for a button on your phone that is not there.
Before you start
gas does not know what device you are holding. It goes by the width of the browser window and picks one of three interface layouts accordingly.
| Browser window width | Interface layout |
|---|---|
| up to roughly 770 pixels | phone: bottom bar, tables as cards |
| roughly 770 to 1,400 pixels | tablet: menu under the three-line button, standard tables |
| over 1,400 pixels | computer: side menu, full tables, printing and export |
This leads to something that surprises users: you can run into the tablet layout on a computer too. A narrower browser window, a screen split into two halves or a higher page zoom is enough. To get back, maximise the window to the full screen and set the zoom back to 100% (Ctrl and 0 on Windows, Cmd and 0 on a Mac).
Turning your phone sideways gives graphs more room and makes them easier to read. It does not change the interface layout though: a phone stays a phone and tables stay as cards.
The bottom bar on a phone
On a phone there is a bar with four buttons along the whole bottom edge of the screen. It stands in for the side menu you know from the computer.
- Dashboard takes you to the main page with the cards for individual networks.
- Search opens a full-screen search for pages and accounts.
- Notifications opens the list of notifications full screen.
- Menu opens the application's main menu full screen.
- On the right-hand side of the bottom bar, tap Menu.
- The menu opens full screen. Swiping up and down, you will find the same items as in the side menu on a computer, including the expandable groups for individual networks.
- Tapping an item takes you to the page and the menu closes by itself.
- At the top centre is the gas logo, which leads to the Overview. At the very bottom is a circle with your initials, which takes you to Settings.
- You can close the menu without going anywhere using the cross in the top right corner.
The top bar looks different on a phone than on a computer: instead of the page name it holds the customer account switcher. You will find the page name right below it, in the page content itself.
The menu on a tablet
There is no bottom bar on a tablet. The main menu hides under the button with three horizontal lines in the top left corner, and tapping it slides a menu panel in from the side of the screen. The search field and the notification bell stay in the top bar, just as on a computer, only the search field is narrower.
Where to find the customer account switcher
A customer account is the space that holds the connected profiles and data of one client or one company. If you have access to several customer accounts, you can switch between them.
- On a phone the switcher is in the top bar on the right. You can recognise it by the small label Customer account with the account name below it.
- On a tablet and on a computer it is at the top right as a button with an icon and the account name.
- Tap the customer account name in the top bar.
- On a phone the list of accounts opens full screen, on larger screens a smaller panel slides out. In both cases there is a search field at the top.
- Tap the account you want to switch to. The list closes and the page loads with the data of the selected account.
If you have access to only one customer account, the name is not a button and cannot be tapped. That is fine, there is nothing to switch to.
On a phone, tables appear as cards
A standard table does not fit the width of a phone, so gas switches most tables into a list of cards. Each row is one card: the name at the top, a supporting detail below it (for example the network) and coloured labels with the status, such as Default.
Above the list is a strip with the table name and the Sorting and Filters buttons.
How to sort the list:
- Above the list, tap Sorting.
- A panel with the columns you can sort by slides up from the bottom.
- Tap a column. The arrow next to it shows the sort direction; tapping the same column again reverses it.
- Confirm with the Apply button.
On a phone you always sort by one column. Sorting by several columns at once stays on the computer.
How to filter the list:
- Above the list, tap Filters. The number in the circle on the button shows how many filters are switched on.
- A panel with the available filters slides up from the bottom; fill them in.
- Tap Apply. The panel closes and the list is filtered.
- Active filters appear above the list as labels. The cross on a label removes one filter, the Clear button in the panel removes them all.
Other things that behave differently with cards than with a table:
- The list has no paging. More cards load by themselves as you swipe down.
- The Actions column is not shown. The icons used on a computer to delete, unlink or edit a row are not on a phone. What to do about it is described below in the section What to leave for a computer.
- Where a table leads to a detail on a computer, tapping the card works. For example in Settings → Connected services, tapping a card takes you to the list of profiles for that account. Elsewhere the card is only information and tapping does nothing.
- When there is no data, the message No records appears. That means the list really is empty, not that it is still loading. While loading you see grey card outlines.
Not every table is turned into cards. The tables in the campaign detail, in the archive of generated reports and on pages with breakdowns by individual dimensions (for example website sessions by source or by city) stay as standard tables even on a phone. Swipe them sideways.
On a tablet the tables stay standard, gas only hides the less important columns depending on the window width so the main ones fit. The export and print buttons above the table appear only on a computer.
Forms, pickers and search
So that choosing is comfortable on a small screen, pickers on a phone open full screen or slide up from the bottom:
- The period picker (the calendar button next to the page name) slides up from the bottom as a panel with preset periods. If you choose a custom range, a calendar appears in the same panel, on a phone always with one month at a time.
- Drop-down lists in forms open full screen so you can search in them and tap with your finger.
- Search opens with the Search button in the bottom bar and fills the whole screen. On a computer the same thing opens with the Ctrl and K shortcut (Cmd and K on a Mac); on a phone without a keyboard you can only search with the button.
- Notifications open with the Notifications button in the bottom bar and also fill the whole screen. On a phone there is no unread count on the button, that is only on the bell on a tablet and on a computer.
- Settings has a vertical list of sections on the left on a computer. On a phone it becomes a single drop-down list above the content, which you use to switch between sections.
Graphs on a small display
On a phone a graph is drawn in a simplified form so it fits the narrow screen and stays readable. That is why there is a sentence below the graph: "The graph is simplified on a phone. You will find the full version on a larger screen."
What exactly is missing from a graph on a phone:
- The legend below the graph. So you cannot tap a series name to hide or show a single curve.
- Value labels at the points and highlighted points on the curve.
- Axis titles and some of the labels on the time axis. About four dates stay on the horizontal axis so the labels do not overlap.
- Comparison with the previous period. Even if you have comparison switched on, the second series is not drawn on a phone.
- The buttons for exporting the graph, entering fullscreen and graph settings. Those appear only on a tablet and on a computer.
- Zooming by dragging your finger across the graph.
What still works: the graph type switch, the granularity switch (day, week, month) and the period picker stay next to the page name as small buttons side by side. You find specific values by tapping into the graph; a bubble with the values of all series for that date appears.
In the detail of a single post, video or pin, the timeline graph is not drawn at all on a phone. Instead there is the sentence "To see the detailed graph and table, open the page in a desktop browser." The destination detail and the detail of a rated subject in the Tourism module behave the same way, where you will see a note that detailed historical data and tables are available in the desktop version.
Overview on a phone
The Overview page holds cards with data from individual networks. On a phone they stack into a single column, on a tablet into a wider grid and on a computer into the widest one.
gas remembers the card layout separately for each of these three widths. So if you rearrange the cards on your phone, the layout you are used to stays on the computer, and the other way round.
The three-dot button next to the page name offers three actions on a phone as well:
- Add widget opens the form for adding another card.
- Edit layout switches on a mode in which cards can be moved and removed. The same item (then called Finish editing) switches the mode off again.
- Reset to default layout returns the cards to their original arrangement.
What to leave for a computer
These tasks cannot be done on a phone. It is not a bug, the controls are deliberately not shown on a small screen. Open gas on a computer, or ask a colleague who is sitting at one.
- Unlinking a profile from a customer account and unlinking an account in Settings → Customer account → Linked accounts. The unlink icon is part of the Actions column.
- Setting the default profile (the star in the Default column). On a phone you only see the Default label on the card, but you cannot change it.
- Changing the profile order by dragging. The card list does not offer dragging rows with a mouse.
- Renaming a profile and other edits made directly in a table row, which are done on a computer by double-clicking a cell.
- Assigning a profile to additional customer accounts, if you have access to several customer accounts.
- Connecting another profile or account from a network list. The add button is part of the strip above the table, which is not shown on a phone. The very first linking of a service can be started from a phone: in Settings → Connected services the empty page shows icons of the individual platforms, which start the sign-in.
- Exporting a table to a file and printing a page. The export and print buttons appear only at a window width above 1,400 pixels.
- Detailed tables with daily values and timeline graphs in the details of posts, videos, destinations and rated subjects.
When you have no signal
gas needs an internet connection to show numbers, the data is downloaded from the server every time you open a page. When the connection is lost, the browser shows a page headed "You are offline" with a Try again button. As soon as you have signal back, tap the button and continue where you left off.
You can add gas to your phone's home screen like a regular app. In the browser menu, choose the option to add to the home screen (in Chrome "Add to Home screen", in Safari "Add to Home Screen" in the share menu). The icon then opens gas directly, without the browser address bar.
Common problems
I cannot see a button on my phone that the guide mentions
The guides and pictures in the help are created on a computer. Some of the controls are deliberately not shown on a phone, because they would not fit on the screen. Go through the list in the section What to leave for a computer, and if your task is among them, open gas on a computer.
The Actions column is missing from the table
On a phone the Actions column is not shown in any table. All the actions from it (unlinking, deleting, editing a row) are done on a computer or on a tablet.
I cannot unlink a profile or set the default profile
In Settings → Customer account → Linked accounts, both actions are part of the controls that are not shown on a phone. Open the page on a computer; there you will find the star for setting the default profile and the unlink icon on every row.
I cannot change the profile order
The order is changed by dragging a row with the mouse, which the card list on a phone does not allow. Drag the rows on a computer, and the new order will then show on the phone too.
The table cannot be filtered
The Filters button above the card list is only there for tables that have mobile filters prepared. If the button is missing, this list cannot be filtered on a phone and you need a computer. If the button is there but says "No filters available", it means the same thing.
The table goes off to the side and I have to scroll it
Some tables (in the campaign detail, in the report archive, on pages with breakdowns by dimensions) stay as standard tables even on a phone. Swipe them sideways, or open them on a computer, where you will see all the columns at once.
On a tablet, the table is missing columns I can see on a computer
On a tablet, gas hides the less important columns depending on the window width so the main ones fit without being squeezed. Turn the tablet sideways to gain room, and some of the columns will come back. You will see absolutely all the columns on a computer.
The graph has almost no labels
That is intentional, on a narrow screen the labels would overlap. You find specific values by tapping into the graph, and a bubble with the values for that day appears. The full version of the graph, with the legend and labels, is on a computer.
The comparison with the previous period is missing from the graph
On a phone the second series with the comparison period is not drawn, even if you have comparison switched on in the graph settings. Open the page on a tablet or on a computer, and the comparison will appear.
I cannot enlarge the graph to fullscreen
The button for enlarging the graph is hidden on a phone together with the export and the graph settings. Turning the phone sideways helps, the graph then gets more room.
Instead of a graph there is only a sentence about a desktop browser
In the detail of a post, video or pin, the timeline graph is not drawn on a phone, because it would not be readable in such a small area. Open the same page on a computer, and you will see both the graph and the table with daily values there.
I cannot export a table or print a page
The export and print buttons only appear at a window width above 1,400 pixels. So they are not on a phone or on a tablet. On a computer you will find them in the strip above the table, and on detail pages next to the page name.
The side menu disappeared on my laptop and a three-line button appeared
The browser window is narrower than roughly 1,400 pixels, so gas has switched to the tablet layout. Maximise the window to the full screen, or set the page zoom back to 100% (Ctrl and 0 on Windows, Cmd and 0 on a Mac). The side menu will come back.
I cannot see the number of unread notifications
The unread count is part of the bell in the top bar, which is not shown on a phone. Tap Notifications in the bottom bar; unread notifications are highlighted in the list.
There is no page name in the top bar
On a phone the top bar holds the customer account switcher instead of the page name, so that you can always see whose data you are looking at. The page name is right below the bar, in the page content.
The "You are offline" page appeared
The device has lost its internet connection. Check your mobile data or wi-fi and tap Try again. Without a connection gas cannot show the numbers, they are downloaded from the server.
The keyboard shortcut for search does not work
The Ctrl and K shortcut (Cmd and K on a Mac) needs a keyboard. On a phone, use the Search button in the bottom bar.
The cards on the Overview are arranged differently on my phone than on my computer
That is correct. gas remembers the card layout separately for phone, tablet and computer, so that they fit sensibly at every width. Rearranging them on one device therefore does not upset the arrangement on the other.
Something else behaves differently from what the help describes
Write to us through the contact form and tell us what device and browser you are working on and which page you had open. A screenshot helps too.
